SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Cameron Dantley, son of one of Notre Dame's basketball greats, threw an 11-yard TD pass to Donte Davis with 42 seconds left, to lead Syracuse to a 24-23 victory Saturday against the stunned and disheartened Fighting Irish.

The Orange trailed 23-10 in the fourth quarter before rallying as Notre Dame struggled mightily on offense. The Irish came away with just six points after starting four times inside the Syracuse 23-yard line.

The victory allowed Syracuse (3-8) to avoid a third 10-loss season in four years under coach Greg Robinson, who was fired last week, effective the end of the season.

Dantley, the son of former NBA star Adrian Dantley, was 13-of-25 passing for 126 yards.

For the Irish (6-5), losing to a 19½-underdog ranks among the worst losses in school history and leaves coach Charlie Weis with a 28-20 record in four seasons.

Weis's 58.3 winning percentage is the same that Bob Davie was fired with after five seasons and Tyrone Willingham after three. Weis has seven years left after this season on a 10-year contract.

The Irish had one last chance to win in the closing seconds, but a 53-yard field goal-attempt by Brandon Walker fell well short. Walker was 3-of-6 on field goals for the game.

The loss was at least as surprising as last year's triple overtime loss to Navy, ending a 43-game winning streak over the Irish -- maybe even moreso.

Freshman Antwon Bailey, who entered the game with 66 yards rushing on 13 carries, started the Orange rally with a 26-yard TD run up the middle with 12:30 left that cut the score to 23-17. Bailey finished with 126 yards rushing.

Notre Dame held the Orange to three-and-out on their next possession and had a chance to ice the game, but a 49-yard field goal attempt by Walker came up short.

The Irish had a chance to hold Syracuse to three-and-out on its next possession, but linebacker Harrison Smith -- who had a key penalty that helped Pittsburgh win in overtime -- was called for pass interference on third-and-1 from the Notre Dame 39. Bailey ran for 43 yards on six carries during the drive before Dantley completed a 9-yard pass to Tony Fiammetta and the game-winner to Davis.

Jimmy Clausen threw two touchdown passes to Golden Tate, but couldn't get the sputtering Irish offense going.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The most rotten of Apple Cups produced one of the most unbelievable, exciting conclusions in the history of the series.

Washington State forced overtime with Nico Grasu's 28-yard field goal on the final play of regulation, then Grasu hit from 37 yards in the second overtime to stun rival Washington 16-13 in double overtime on Saturday, retaining the Apple Cup -- and keeping the Huskies winless.

Ryan Perkins kicked a 22-yard field goal for Washington to send the game to a second overtime, but just a few minutes later was wide right with a 37-yard attempt.

After WSU went just five yards, Grasu calmly drilled the kick to give Washington State its second win of the year and bring celebrating students onto the field anyway.

Washington State won the Apple Cup for the fourth time in the last five years for the first time in the series' history.

The stunned Huskies remained the only winless team in the country and need an upset of California on Dec. 6 to avoid the school's first winless season since 1890.

The finish was stunning because of Washington State's inability to move the ball on offense with any consistency for the first 59 minutes.

The Cougars took possession at their own 20 with 56 seconds left and little hope after quarterback Kevin Lopina spent most of the day under constant pressure from Washington's pass rush.

Lopina was suddenly nearly perfect. He was 4-for-6 on the final drive, including a 48-yard completion to freshman Jared Karstetter to the Washington 18 with 24 seconds left. Karstetter then caught a 7-yard pass but didn't get out of bounds, forcing Lopina to rush to the line and spike the ball with 2 seconds left. Grasu then kicked a 28-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to send the game to overtime tied at 10.

WSU got the opening possession in the first overtime, and gambled by going for it on fourth-and-1 at the 4. Logwone Mitz got the needed yard, but the Cougars stalled at the 2 and had to settle for a 19-yard kick from Grasu for a 13-10 advantage, before Perkins hit from 22 yards.

Washington State's only other win this season came over Portland State of the Football Championship Subdivision. The Cougars had been shut out in three of their previous four games, but put together just enough offense to outlast their partners in misery.

The first matchup of 10-loss teams in Pac-10 Conference history won't stand out for its quality of play. But for all the chuckles and national attention placed on the embarrassing matchup, the Cougars and Huskies played a tight game that continued the tradition of the rivalry. Only once in the last 14 matchups has the game been decided by more than 10 points.

It was a painful experience for Washington and outgoing coach Tyrone Willingham. The Huskies dominated the line of scrimmage all day, able to bully a team for the first time this season, and seemed set for their first win in more than a year.

But they made crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter, unable to finish a pair of drives inside the WSU 25. Then both Washington kickers -- Jared Ballman and Perkins -- missed makable kicks. Ballman was wide right from 40 yards, Perkins was wide left from 28 yards with 3:24 left in regulation.

Washington led 10-0 behind the running of Willie Griffin, who finished with a career best 116 yards and a 3-yard touchdown in the first half. Perkins also hit a 35-yarder in the second quarter and the Huskies jogged off the field at halftime taunting the Cougars' student section with a 10-0 lead.

Washington State finally got its spark late in the third quarter when Mitz sprinted 57 yards for a touchdown just as Cougars fans began refilling the stands following halftime. It was the first time the Cougars scored since the first play of the fourth quarter against Arizona on Nov. 8.

South Bend fans shower Notre Dame players, police with snowballs

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame football players were pelted by snowballs from fans sitting in the student section during their 24-23 loss to Syracuse on Saturday.

The game was played a day after South Bend got hit with about 10 inches of snow. The stands and field were clear, but there was snow along the fringes of the field.

At first people started by throwing the snow in the air, but then began quickly tossing snowballs toward the Notre Dame sideline.

Defensive lineman Ian Williams got hit in the helmet, defensive end Ethan Johnson was struck on the left cheek and a St. Joseph County police officer on the sideline looking into the crowd got hit in the chest.

An NBC camera man also was a frequent target and several snowballs reached the field, although none landed near where play was occurring.

When the Irish defense held a meeting on the sideline, injured linebacker Brian Smith stood on a bench to try to shield his teammates. But when a snowball hit defensive tackle Pat Kuntz, he stood and faced the crowd and appeared to challenge whoever threw it to come down on the field.

At least one fan was seen being led away by police.

Probabaly just some redneck SEC fans throwing snowballs at the Irish. Their fanbase, coaches, players, and soforth are the classiest in the nation. They would never do anything like that. They never do anything wrong in South Bend. Hillarious, watching Holtz defend them on College football final last night. They're going to end up 6-6 with the LeBron James of college football.
